FAQ about Orthodontics

What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great time to see an orthodontist. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens.

About one in every five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Whether you’re considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any age is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The amount of time spent in orthodontic treatment will vary depending on the individual patient. Every smile responds differently to treatment, and every person has unique treatment needs. Treatment times can take anywhere from six months up to 3 years, but most standard treatments take 20-22 months.

What's the difference between braces and clear aligners?

Both clear aligners and braces are orthodontic appliances that apply controlled forces to teeth to move them within the jaw bones. While many malocclusions can be treated with either appliance, certain malocclusions may be treated more effectively with either braces, aligners, or in some cases, a combination of both.

Dr. Ayers can discuss with you which might work best in your case.

Do you offer any discounts if my child is already being treated by you?

Yes, we do offer a family discount for either parents or additional children being treated at our office.

What if I have TMJ?

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, or TMD as its commonly called, is often a multifactorial issue. Malocclusions can be one of the causes of TMD, so it’s possible that you may benefit from orthodontic treatment.

If you have TMD or jaw sensitivity you can discuss with us ways to make your treatment more comfortable.
